With the ever-increasing speed with which we conduct our working lives, keeping our workspaces tidy can often be forgotten. Either that or it is so far down the list of priorities, it just never gets done. However, having a cluttered desk could be affecting how you work.
5 Tips to Keep Your Desk Tidy
When your environment is cluttered, the chaos restricts your ability to focus. The clutter also limits your brain’s ability to process information. Clutter makes you distracted and unable to process information as well as you do in an uncluttered, organized, and serene environment. – Princeton University
With this in mind, we have put together 5 tips for keeping your desk clear and tidy;
Regular Clear Out
It doesn’t take long for unnecessary pieces of paper and junk to accumulate, making your desk look untidy. Get rid of those post-it notes floating around and all the pens in the pen pot that no longer work!
Clear Desk Policy
Having a clear desk policy will help encourage productivity and the clear mindedness needed to be more focussed on work. Tempting though it may be to fill your desk with trinkets from home, keeping the objects on your desk restricted to those that you need will help you stay focussed on the task at hand. “Clear Desk” days can also help your office cleaners to be more effective.
Go Paperless
It’s not always possible to have a completely paperless office, but keeping print-outs to a minimum will definitely make it easier to keep your desk clutter-free. Not only does it make your desk look messy, it could also be a data protection issue. Not printing unless necessary is also better for the environment and keeps costs down. Make a point of going through any paperwork that you do have at least once a week and recycling or shredding any paperwork that’s no longer needed. For paperwork that is needed, having an organised in and out tray system with keep your desk neat and tidy.
Keep It Clean
We all have those days that just don’t seem to contain enough hours and we end up grabbing something to eat at our desks in order to carry on working. However, this is not only unhygienic, but could be counter-productive. Getting away from our desks and taking a break from our screens almost acts a reset button for our brains. Using our lunch-breaks to move around and get some fresh air means that we are likely to be more productive in the afternoon. It also means our desks stay clean and tidy!
Get Organised
Digital clutter can be just as distracting as physical clutter. Leaving a few minutes at the end of every day to clear your desktop is a must. Get rid of any files not needed, and move others into the relevant folders. If you’ve not organised things for a while, it may take a little time to get in order, but once organised, just a few minutes at the end of everyday will mean a fresh start every morning!
