Do you know what lurks in your office carpets?

September 14, 2016

It can be easy to miss the gradual accumulation of dust and dirt on your office carpets. Until perhaps you have a spillage to clean up and you end up with a clean patch that doesn’t match the colour of the rest of the carpet! Dust, dirt and salt in the winter, all get trampled into the office carpet on the feet of clients and employees, as we tend not to remove our shoes as we may do at home. Over time, these things break down the fibres of carpet meaning you’ll have to replace it much sooner. However, dust and dirt are not the worst things that could be lurking in your office carpet!

Do you know what lurks in your office carpets?

Over time, these things break down the fibres of carpet meaning you’ll have to replace it much sooner. However, dust and dirt are not the worst things that could be lurking in your office carpet!

Food & Drinks

If employees eat at their desks, chances are there will be food particles and possibly the odd drink stain on the carpet. Not only does this not look great, it can result in bacteria breeding ground not just smelly carpet!

Germs, Mould & Mildew

Your carpet could be home to pathogens and bacteria like mould, mildew, salmonella, E. coli, staphylococcus, norovirus, and more, and you’d never even know!  Mould and mildew form underneath your carpet in warm, wet environments, and some of these bacteria can survive in uncleaned carpet for more than a month!

Skin Flakes

You may be surprised to know that human beings actually shed their skin more often than snakes do! The average person sheds around 1 million skin flakes every day, and where do you think most of that ends up? Oh yes, on the carpet, gross right?

Bugs

Although we can’t usually see them, microscopic bugs, fleas and dust mites can live in our carpets quite happily. Dust mites feed on all those skin flakes we lose! They are also known to cause allergies so you really don’t want them as permanent guests.
