The Importance of Cleaning Your Warehouse

April 25, 2017

Why the cleanliness of your warehouse is next to godliness – and maintaining a safe system of work

Today, we rely on warehouses more than ever to get our daily provisions and the odd luxury item.  At a smaller scale, this is the ‘backstage’ part of your supermarket.  At a larger scale, it is the nerve centre of online retailers, usually seen off motorway junctions.  Whether we buy a bottle of milk or a state-of-the-art flat screen television, a well managed warehouse is a key link to the purchasing process.

This is where cleanliness comes to the fore.  The warehouse floor needs to be in tip top condition, whether non-food items or perishable goods are stored.  An untidy warehouse can delay the purchasing process as finding items is a more frustrating affair for backroom staff.  The floor should be free of obstructions, especially where fork lift trucks are used to pick up and pack items.

For warehouse cleans, a sit-on scrubber sweeper fits the bill on large sites.  One example is the Tennant M20.  This behemoth of a scrubber and sweeper machine glides across the floors with ease – inside and outside.  Of its ilk, the control panel has intuitive controls and its high driving position makes for good all round visibility.  It can scrub or sweep, or scrub and sweep simultaneously.

The Importance of Cleaning Your Warehouse

There is more to a clean warehouse than the cleanliness of its floors and forecourts.  It is the placement of items which enables its workforce to find items in a jiffy.  Efficient signage is helpful too, alongside logical shelving layouts.

A dirty warehouse floor could also cause accidents as well as slowing down stock control.  Clutter on the warehouse floor could block gangways, especially designated walkways for pedestrians and forklift vehicles.  There is scope for slippages and trips.  Avoiding the former is mitigated with a quick once over from an industrial cleaning machine.

In all, a lacklustre warehouse is bad for your business.  Any degree of complacency and reticence could lead to distribution woes and poor customer feedback.  The television might take a little longer to get to your home.  Your supermarket could be shifting fewer bottles of Semi-Skimmed Milk from the shelves.  Cleanliness is the keystone of any well-managed warehouse space – from the smallest shop to the mightiest of online retailers.
