Keeping Work Refrigerators Clean

May 24, 2017

When it comes to the workplace, the cleaning is often divided amongst the staff. People tend to take care of their own personal workspaces automatically. Problems arise when it comes to the communal areas such as kitchen and bathrooms. Generally, because no one really wants to take responsibility, after all, if you don’t do it, somebody else will have to, right?

This is all well and good when we are just talking about running to vacuum cleaner around quickly, or dusting the cobwebs from the light fittings. When it comes to the kitchen, especially the fridge, leaving this chore could potentially make people very ill.

Having a refrigerator at work is a great idea. It means we can bring in leftovers from the night before for our lunch, or make and bring in lunch to save ourselves a few pennies. However, we have all heard a horror story or two; the unidentified furry creature living in at the back that no-one wants to own up to being the most common! Studies have shown that the most bacteria riddled area in the fridge is in fact the salad drawer, with over an average of 7,850 bacteria colony-forming units per square centimetre including E. coli, salmonella and listeria.

The NHS website suggests that to combat bacteria when it comes to our refrigerated food, we should;

  • keep it at the right temperature (between 0°C and 5°C)
  • keep the fridge door closed as much as possible
  • wait for food to cool down before you put it in the fridge
  • if your fridge is full, turn the temperature down a little lower to help it fight germs

In the workplace, it may help to have a ‘rules for the work fridge’ poster up in the kitchen, just as a little reminder people to take a little responsibility. This also means it won’t all fall to the same person all the time!

Done with a little humour and maybe a funny picture, it will just give people that little reminder that they need, for example;
