The leaves have disappeared off the trees, the evenings are darker and it’s time to tag an extra 10-minutes onto your morning routine to defrost the car! Now is the time to consider the effect the winter months can have on your commercial building, in particular, its floors, and consider any changes you might need to make to your cleaning schedule.
Winter Floor Cleaning Tips
As Winter takes a firm hold, the mud, snow, salt, sand and general soggy debris can not only leave your floors looking a bit sad and neglected, they can pose a safety risk to your staff and customers too. Here are a few tips we’ve put together to prevent slips and trips and also keep your business premises looking professional.
Use Entry Mats
Using good quality entrance mats is one of the simplest, yet most effective things you can do at this time of year to reduce debris being tracked in all over your floors. They absorb dirt and moisture as people come in, saving your hard floors and carpets from the worst of the slush. In order to stay effective, entrance mats need regular cleaning, much more so in the Winter months as they quickly get clogged, especially with salt and sand. Here at aZtec, we offer a convenient ‘lift and lay’ matting service where we take your mat away to be cleaned on a fortnightly basis, leaving a freshly cleaned one in its place.
Increase Vacuuming Frequency
Because of the icy pavements and road, there is a tendency for us to throw a lot of salt, sand and gravel at the problem! While this is great for preventing slips and other accidents, it’s not great for your carpets and can lead to damage like fraying, over time if not kept on top of. By hoovering more often over the Winter months, you’ll be getting the debris out of the carpet before it gets too ground in by people’s feet!
Professional Floor Cleaning
Aside from the general dirt and debris, Winter brings a particular issue for flooring in the form of salt. When mixed with moisture, this can leave a chalky white residue behind once dry, which if left can cause a permanent stain, both on carpets and hard floors. Make sure hard floors get thoroughly mopped regularly, and for carpets a regular steam clean will keep them stain free.
Safety First
On a final note, although it’s important to look after your floors, it’s more important to look out for your staff and customers. If your floors are wet, either from outside or cleaning, don’t forget to use the yellow ‘wet floor’ warning signs.
